What time do the lights come on?

They’re technically lit from 6 AM, but the moment you drove over the pass for happens at dusk, around 4:30 to 5:00 PM in December . Be on Front Street before 4:30 if you want the shot of the village lighting up against the last alpenglow on the Cascades. By 6 PM on a December Saturday, you’ll be sharing that view with a few thousand people.

The honest answer about crowds

On peak December Saturdays, as many as 40,000 people come through a town of 2,500. Front Street is shoulder-to-shoulder from roughly 3 to 8 PM, restaurant waits run over an hour, and Highway 2 backs up in both directions.

Three ways around it, in order of how well they work:

1. Come on a weeknight in early December. Same lights, strolling carolers Monday through Thursday evenings, half the crowd, and rooms are actually available.

2. Stay overnight and go out late. Day-trippers clear out by 8 or 9 PM. Front Street at 9:30 on a snowy night — lights still on, streets nearly empty — is the version of this town most visitors never see. It’s the single best argument for booking a room instead of driving home.

3. Come in January or February. The lights stay on through the end of February, snow is more reliable, crowds are gone, and rates drop. January adds Winter Karneval with ice carving and fireworks. If you want the feeling more than the festival programming, this is the better trip — and almost nobody planning a “Leavenworth Christmas” knows it.

How much time do you need?

About three hours covers it: walking the lights, a bratwurst and Glühwein, the Gazebo music, and the Festhalle. Add a sit-down dinner and you’re at four or five. That’s the case for an overnight — the 4:30 lighting, dinner, and the quiet late walk don’t fit around a same-day drive back over Stevens Pass in the snow.

Where to park

Downtown parking fills by late morning on December weekends. Your options:

Free park-and-ride with a free shuttle. Park at the Wilkommen Park & Ride behind Safeway, just east of downtown; a free shuttle runs into town daily during the Christmas season. Link Transit park-and-rides also offer free parking and a free ride in.
Pay lots. Several downtown, including the large lot on Highway 2 at the east end of town. Arrive before 11 AM on a weekend or plan to circle.
Stay overnight and stop thinking about it. Guests here park once in a dedicated space and don’t move the car again. Downtown is a five-minute drive, or take the shuttle in and skip Front Street traffic entirely.

What actually needs a reservation

The lights need nothing. Nearly everything else worth doing in December does — and this is where most visitors get caught out.

Book first, in this order:

1. Your room. December weekends fill months ahead. Six months out is not too early. Weeknights and January are far easier.

2. Leavenworth Reindeer Farm — 10389 Chumstick Highway, about a mile from the village. You go inside the enclosure and hand-feed the herd. The November–December “Celebrate the Season” experience runs $60–75 and includes Santa in the historic barn. Advance reservations required, booked online, and December sells out. Height restrictions apply inside the enclosure. The walk down to the entrance is steep, but they’ll send a cart up for anyone who needs one.

3. Sleigh rides. Leavenworth Sleigh Rides runs 40–50 minute rides through open meadows with a stop at the barn for hot cider by the fire. One thing to know before you book: they operate out of Mountain Springs Lodge, 14 miles north of town — allow 30 minutes for the winter drive . Peak season (December through January 4) runs $295 for the private one-horse sleigh seating six, $220 per row on the Old Fashioned sleigh, or $160 per row on the Santa sleigh; all drop after January 5. Bring your own blankets — they don’t provide them. No dogs on the sleighs. Free cancellation up to 24 hours out. Book online . Eagle Creek Ranch , eight miles northeast, also runs winter sleigh rides — reservations by phone only , 509-548-7798, 8 AM to 8 PM.

4. Dinner. Knowing which places take reservations and which don’t is worth an hour of standing in the cold:

Places that take reservations — book these when you book your room:

Larch — handmade pasta, booked through OpenTable . Dinner from 4 PM, maximum party of 8. Opens early at 1 PM on the December 13–14, 20–21, and 27–28 weekends.
Mana — reservations required. Parties of 5 or more should call 509-548-1662.
Mozart’s, Old World Chophouse, Visconti’s, and Colchuck’s also take reservations.

Walk-in only — plan around them:

Andreas Keller runs a same-day waitlist. Put your name in, then go walk the lights while you wait.
München Haus is counter service with a heated beer garden — the fastest good meal on a packed festival night.

Beyond the lights

The lights take one evening. If you’re staying two nights, this is how to fill the daylight.

Tubing at the Leavenworth Ski Hill (10701 Ski Hill Drive, 1.5 miles up Ski Hill Drive). The Lt. Michael Adams Tubing Park provides the tube and pulls you up a 100-foot hill by rope tow. No gear, no skill. Two things most guides get wrong: you cannot buy tubing tickets online and you cannot reserve — tickets are sold in person at the Ski Hill booth, and one ticket buys six runs on the day you buy it. Sign the waiver online beforehand to save time, and check their conditions page that morning for the day’s schedule — it’s snow-dependent — plus the webcam to see how the line looks. Recommended minimum age is 8, and everyone rides independently, no kids on laps. They’ll give you a free trial run before you buy.

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The Icicle River Trails are minutes from our door. Osprey Ski Shop rents right at the trailhead (7505 CYO Road): snowshoes $18/day, Nordic package $28 adult and $22 youth, open 9 AM–4 PM weekends and holidays, weekdays by phone at 509-548-6800. In town, Der Sportsmann at 837 Front Street rents snowshoes with poles for $22 and Nordic packages from $29, open 9–6 Monday through Thursday and 9–7 Friday through Sunday. If you can walk, you can snowshoe.

Downhill skiing. Stevens Pass is 35 minutes west; Mission Ridge about 40 minutes east, often sunnier with lighter crowds. The Ski Hill itself has two rope tows and a magic carpet — ideal for first-timers.

No gear, no plan. The Nutcracker Museum, the wine tasting rooms along Front Street, and the Waterfront Park walk below.

Where the crowds aren’t

Waterfront Park and Blackbird Island. Cross the footbridge in front of the Post Hotel and you’re on a quiet riverside trail while Front Street heaves two blocks away. It’s a one- to two-mile walk along the Wenatchee, one of the better winter birdwatching spots in the country — deer, and the occasional river otter. Bring ice cleats if it’s below freezing. This is where we send guests who need twenty minutes away from the crowd.

The side streets. Everyone funnels onto Front Street. The blocks just off it often have the prettiest displays and a fraction of the foot traffic.

The village at 9 AM. Day-trippers arrive after noon. Early morning, the streets are nearly empty, the bakeries are warm, and the lights are still on. A slow breakfast and a quiet walk, done before the buses arrive.

The drive over the pass

From Seattle it’s about 2.5 hours via Highway 2 over Stevens Pass. In December, check WSDOT pass conditions before you leave and carry chains — closures and compression delays are routine on festival weekends. If Stevens is closed or ugly, the alternate is I-90 to Blewett Pass on US-97, roughly 45 minutes longer.

Where to stay for the Village of Lights

Our honest recommendation is a little counterintuitive: don’t stay in the middle of it.

A room on Front Street puts you inside the festival — which also means inside the crowds, the noise, and the traffic until late. All Seasons River Inn sits one mile from downtown on Icicle Road, directly on the Wenatchee River. Five minutes to the lights. Five minutes back to the sound of the river instead of the crowd.

All seven rooms face the river , each with a king bed and a private balcony or patio, and six of the seven have fireplaces — which in December is rather the point. Select rooms are dog-friendly , and a festival weekend with a dog is far easier from here than from a hotel in the middle of it: leashed walk through the lights, then a quiet riverfront balcony instead of a busy hallway. Free parking with every room, EV charging on site, and we’re rated 9.8/10 on Expedia and 4.9 on Tripadvisor.

One piece of advice we give everyone: if you want a December weekend, book by early fall. If you’re reading this in October and the weekends are gone, take a weeknight — or take January. You’ll have a better trip either way.

How to Float the River in Leavenworth, WA: Access Points, Free Shuttle, and Tube Rentals (2026)

Where to launch, where to rent tubes, and how the free Leavenworth river shuttle works. A local's guide to floating the Wenatchee River, from a boutique hotel on Icicle Road. Plus a map of the river float at the end.

The Wenatchee River runs right through Leavenworth, and from roughly mid-June to mid-September, floating it is the best free attraction in the valley. The short version: rent a tube in town or bring your own, launch near the Icicle Road bridge, take out at Waterfront Park downtown, and ride the city's free river shuttle back to your car.

Guests ask us about this more than anything else in summer. Here's everything we tell them.

When to Float

The season runs mid-June through mid-September, depending on water levels. Early season means faster current and colder water — you'll finish the float quicker and you'll feel it. By August the river is warm, slow, and shallow in spots. Both are good. They're just different trips.

Outfitters watch the flow rate closely. Most won't run tubes until the Wenatchee drops to around 900 cubic feet per second, which usually happens by late June or early July. If you're planning a trip in June, check with a rental company before you count on floating.

Best time of day: late morning. Around 11 AM the air is warm enough that cold water feels good, and you're ahead of the afternoon crowd.

The Two Main Routes

The Bridge River access point at 8801 Icicle Road to Waterfront Park.

This is the classic Leavenworth float. You launch at the bridge just south of town on Icicle Road, drift past the golf course, and take out at Waterfront Park downtown. Expect 1 to 3 hours depending on flow and how often you stop. There are islands and beaches along the way worth stopping for. Blackbird Island, near the take-out, is a good one.

The Icicle Creek float (early season: late June to mid-July).

Put in at the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery at 8025 East Leavenworth Road and float Icicle Creek down to the Wenatchee and into town — about 4 miles, usually 2 to 4 hours. The water is genuinely cold, it's snowmelt off the Enchantments. No rapids. This route closes when flows drop in mid-July, partly to protect fish in the low, warm water.

Where to Rent Tubes and Gear

Three outfitters handle most of the tubing in Leavenworth. All of them include life jackets and shuttle service to the launch, so if you rent, your logistics are solved.

Leavenworth Outdoor Center — Located right at Waterfront Park downtown. In 2026 their 4-mile float runs June 13 through around July 19, and the 2-mile float runs July 3 through September 13. They rent dog tubes and cargo tubes for coolers, and they include frisbee paddles, which sounds like a gimmick until you're trying to steer. If you want the easiest possible experience, start here.

Osprey Rafting Company — Trips meet at Happy Wave Beach, about 2 miles east of town on Highway 2. Their adventure tubing route has small rapids and fewer crowds. This is the pick if a lazy float sounds too lazy. Icicle Ridge Winery is across the road for afterward.

River Riders — Also on Highway 2 east of town, near mile marker 102. Commercial-grade tubes with handles and cup holders, $30 per person, reservations recommended. They're strict about water levels, which is a good sign in an outfitter.

If you have your own tubes, skip the rental and use the free shuttle instead.

The Free Leavenworth River Shuttle

This is the part most visitors don't know about.

The City of Leavenworth runs a free river shuttle in summer, operated with Wenatchee Valley Shuttle, connecting the main put-ins and take-outs.

Here's the pattern that works: drop your group and gear at the launch site first. Drive to the East Leavenworth Public Boat Ramp and park. Hop the free shuttle back to the put-in, meet your group, and float. When you take out, your car is waiting.

Shuttle rules worth knowing: no alcohol on board, no pets (service animals are fine), no smoking or vaping, and gear capacity is limited — deflate what you can. Check the City of Leav enworth river shuttle page for current stops and hours before you go, since the route and schedule are set each season. Typically it's on the weekends.

The shuttle runs along Icicle Road, which happens to be our road. If you're staying with us, you're a quick walk to launch before most visitors have found parking.

DIY or Outfitter?

Go with an outfitter if you don't have tubes, you want life jackets and gear handled, or it's your first time on this river. The rental cost buys you zero logistics.

Go DIY with the free shuttle if you have your own tubes and want the float to cost nothing. You'll handle your own safety gear, so bring real life jackets, not pool floaties.

Best Time to Visit Leavenworth

Some higher-elevation hikes like Colchuck Lake may still have snow into June, but valley trails like Icicle Gorge and Waterfront Park are fully accessible. Summer (June–August) — The most popular season for good reason. Warm weather opens up every hike, river floating on the Icicle is in full swing, brewery patios are packed, and the town buzzes with energy. Weekends get crowded — if you can visit midweek, you'll have a much more relaxed experience. Book accommodations early, especially for July and August weekends. This is prime time for rafting the Wenatchee River and catching outdoor concerts and festivals.
Fall (September–October) — Many of our repeat guests say fall is their favorite time to visit. Oktoberfest brings Bavarian music, beer, and big crowds on festival weekends. But the real draw is the foliage — the drive through Tumwater Canyon turns into a tunnel of reds and golds, and it's one of the most beautiful fall drives in Washington. Temperatures are comfortable for hiking and the summer crowds thin out between festival weekends.
Winter (November–February) — Leavenworth's Christmas lighting festival runs from Thanksgiving through February and transforms the town into something out of a storybook. December weekends are the busiest time of year — book months ahead and consider visiting midweek or in January/February for the same lights with far fewer people. Stevens Pass is about 40 minutes away for skiing and snowboarding. The town is also beautiful under fresh snow, and there's great snowshoeing along Icicle Road trails.

Argonaut Espresso Bar : Dog-friendly patio and a solid morning coffee stop before hitting the trails. Pro tip - the have the best breakfast burrito in town and make a killer Cortado.
Doghaus Brewery : A tiny nano brewery tucked in a basement near Waterfront Park. Dogs are welcome inside — not just on the patio. The name says it all. Think dogs, beer, and cornhole.
Münchén Haus : Outdoor gourmet sausage spot right on Front Street. Dogs are welcome in the open-air seating area. A Leavenworth classic.
Leavenworth Sausage Garten : Shaded outdoor seating with river views. Laid-back and easy with a dog.
Blewett Brewing : Craft beer and artisan pizza with a dog-friendly patio. Great for a longer sit-down meal after a hike.
