Outdoor Adventures to Share With Your Dog
Hiking Trails in Leavenworth
Trail safety with dogs: Black bears and cougars live in the area. Keep your dog on leash at all times — an off-leash dog can chase wildlife and lead a bear back to you. Make noise on the trail, carry bear spray, and stick to well-trafficked trails like Waterfront Park and Icicle Ridge where encounters are rare.
Leavenworth is surrounded by trails that are perfect for hiking with your dog. Here are a few favorites:
- Waterfront Park Trail: This easy, flat trail along the river in Leavenworth is ideal for a romantic stroll with your pup. It’s especially stunning in the fall, when the leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and gold.
- Icicle Ridge Trail: If you’re up for a bit more of a challenge, this trail offers sweeping views of the valley and plenty of spots for your dog to explore.
- Ski Hill Trail: Great for a leisurely hike, this trail is shaded and less crowded, making it perfect for couples and dogs.
- Blackbird Island - An easy, dog-friendly trail with river access and quiet picnic spots. Great for a riverside lunch with your pup.
On our first trip to Leavenworth with Rufus, we packed a picnic and found a quiet spot by the river on Blackbird Island. It was the perfect way to relax and enjoy the scenery while Rufus happily played in the water. Many areas along the river are dog-friendly, so you can let your pup splash around while you unwind.
Dog-Friendly Restaurants and Patios in Leavenworth
Leavenworth’s dog-friendly vibe extends to its dining scene. Many restaurants and breweries have outdoor patios where dogs are welcome, so you can enjoy a meal or a drink without leaving your pup behind.
Some of my favorite spots for dining in Leavenworth with dogs include:
- Icicle Brewing Company: Spacious shaded patio with plenty of room for your dog to sprawl out. Great craft beer selection and a relaxed vibe. (Rufus loves it here!) Plus fireplaces outside to keep warm in the winter. They do bingo every week.
- Rhein Haus: Bavarian-style pretzels and sausages with a dog-friendly patio. One of the more popular spots downtown.
- Argonaut Espresso Bar: Dog-friendly patio and a solid morning coffee stop before hitting the trails. Pro tip - the have the best breakfast burrito in town and make a killer Cortado.
- Doghaus Brewery: A tiny nano brewery tucked in a basement near Waterfront Park. Dogs are welcome inside — not just on the patio. The name says it all. Think dogs, beer, and cornhole.
- Münchén Haus: Outdoor gourmet sausage spot right on Front Street. Dogs are welcome in the open-air seating area. A Leavenworth classic.
- Leavenworth Sausage Garten: Shaded outdoor seating with river views. Laid-back and easy with a dog.
- Blewett Brewing: Craft beer and artisan pizza with a dog-friendly patio. Great for a longer sit-down meal after a hike.
- Bear Bear: A breakfast and brunch spot downtown with a dog-friendly patio. Good way to start the day before a hike.
Tips for Visiting Leavenworth with Your Dog
Bring a leash, waste bags, water bowl, and your dog's vaccination records. Call restaurants ahead during peak season to confirm patio availability. Leavenworth is dog-friendly, but dogs must stay on leash in all public areas — as a local innkeeper, I can tell you guests and locals both appreciate owners who clean up after their pups.

Is Leavenworth dog-friendly?
Yes. Most brewery patios and many restaurant patios welcome dogs. Downtown shops along Front Street allow well-behaved dogs on leash. The town is surrounded by dog-friendly trails including Waterfront Park, Icicle Ridge, Ski Hill, and Blackbird Island.
Are dogs allowed in downtown Leavenworth?
Yes. Dogs on leash are welcome on sidewalks and in many shops. You'll even find water bowls outside businesses on warm days on Front street.
Is there a dog park in Leavenworth?
There's no dedicated fenced dog park, but Waterfront Park and the areas along the river offer plenty of open space for walking. Dogs must stay on leash in all public areas.
Can I float the river with my dog?
Yes. Leavenworth Outdoor Center rents float tubes and stand up paddle boards and allows dogs on board. Use your judgment based on your dog's comfort with water and crowds — the river gets busy in peak summer.
Are dogs allowed in the Enchantments?
No. Dogs are prohibited in the Enchantments wilderness area to protect wildlife and water quality. Stick to Icicle Ridge, Waterfront Park Trail, or Ski Hill Trail instead.
Should I bring bear spray when hiking with my dog in Leavenworth?
It's a good idea. Black bears live in the area, especially on less-trafficked trails. Keep your dog leashed, make noise, and carry bear spray as a precaution. Encounters are uncommon on popular trails like Waterfront Park and Icicle Ridge.
