Leavenworth WA Travel Guide 2026: Best Hotels, Things to Do & Local Secrets
Planning a trip to Leavenworth, Washington?
I'm Dean, owner of All Seasons River Inn on the Wenatchee River in Leavenworth, Washington. After hosting hundreds of guests and helping them plan their trips, I've put together this guide to share the best hotels, restaurants, hikes, coffee shops, and hidden gems that visitors come back raving about — plus a few spots most people miss. Whether you're planning a day trip from Seattle, a romantic weekend, or a week-long adventure, this is everything you need to know.
Best Time to Visit Leavenworth
- Spring (March–May) — This is Leavenworth's best-kept secret. Hotel rates are lower, the town is quieter, and the mountains start turning green. Wildflowers begin blooming along trails by late April. The Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest in May is a fun niche event. Some higher-elevation hikes like Colchuck Lake may still have snow into June, but valley trails like Icicle Gorge and Waterfront Park are fully accessible. Our guests who visit in spring almost always say they wish they'd discovered the off-season sooner.
- Summer (June–August) — The most popular season for good reason. Warm weather opens up every hike, river floating on the Icicle is in full swing, brewery patios are packed, and the town buzzes with energy. Weekends get crowded — if you can visit midweek, you'll have a much more relaxed experience. Book accommodations early, especially for July and August weekends. This is prime time for rafting the Wenatchee River and catching outdoor concerts and festivals.
- Fall (September–October) — Many of our repeat guests say fall is their favorite time to visit. Oktoberfest brings Bavarian music, beer, and big crowds on festival weekends. But the real draw is the foliage — the drive through Tumwater Canyon turns into a tunnel of reds and golds, and it's one of the most beautiful fall drives in Washington. Temperatures are comfortable for hiking and the summer crowds thin out between festival weekends.
- Winter (November–February) — Leavenworth's Christmas lighting festival runs from Thanksgiving through February and transforms the town into something out of a storybook. December weekends are the busiest time of year — book months ahead and consider visiting midweek or in January/February for the same lights with far fewer people. Stevens Pass is about 40 minutes away for skiing and snowboarding. The town is also beautiful under fresh snow, and there's great snowshoeing along Icicle Road trails.

What are the must-try foods in Leavenworth?
The bratwurst from München Haus is probably the most iconic food in Leavenworth — get it with Beecher's cheese sauce. Andreas Keller serves the best schnitzel in a lively underground Bavarian dining hall with live accordion music. For breakfast, Argonaut Coffee & Biscuits has a cult following for their buttermilk biscuits. Homefires Bakery is the local pick for fresh cookies and pies to take on a hike. Are there any scenic drives near Leavenworth?
Yes! The Cascade Loop Scenic Highway and Tumwater Canyon Drive offer breathtaking views of the mountains and river. Tumwater Canyon is particularly stunning in the fall when the foliage glows in reds and golds.
What is the best time to visit Leavenworth?
Each season offers something different. Summer (June–August) is the most popular — warm weather, hiking, river floating, and outdoor dining. Fall (September–October) brings Oktoberfest, stunning foliage along Tumwater Canyon, and smaller crowds. Winter (November–February) is magical for the Christmas lighting festival and close access to Stevens Pass skiing, though expect bigger crowds on December weekends. Spring (March–May) is the quiet season with lower hotel rates, wildflower hikes, and a relaxed atmosphere. As an innkeeper, I'll say spring is the most underrated — the town has a completely different energy when it's not packed."
How far is Leavenworth from Seattle?
Leavenworth is about 120 miles east of Seattle, roughly a 2- to 2.5-hour drive depending on your route. The most scenic option is Highway 2 over Stevens Pass, which winds through Tumwater Canyon — stunning in fall. The faster and more reliable winter route is I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass to Highway 97 over Blewett Pass. Always check pass conditions in winter, as closures happen.
